DEWORMING >>> EQUINE
DEWORMING
There are more than 150 internal parasites that afflict the horse. Among the most common and troublesome are:
- Large Strongyles (blood worm) - Bots
- Small Strongyles - Tapeworms
- Ascarids (round worms) - Threadworms
- Pinworms - Lungworms
Any or all of these parasites can be present in the horse at one time, but they may be at different stages in their life cycles. Some species can lay more than 200,000 eggs in a day, so parasite loads can escalate quickly.
We use The Preventicare Program... sponsered by Pfizer, for more information just call our offices...
"PreventiCare is a reasonable program. We have quite a few clients participating. It is simple, affordable, and makes sense. There is even a discount when more than 1 patient is enrolled. Just ask me or Dr. Nancy Hall for PreventiCare details and how to sign-up." - Dr. Jay Joyce
In addition to the regular, rotating deworming program, pregnant mares should be administered an ivermectin-based product 4 weeks prior to foaling.
Foals can be dewormed with a liquid ivermectin product at 1 ml per 100 pounds, orally, monthly, for the first 12 months, then they can be treated as adults.
