Great Example of community  and why we do what we do to help save lives!!!

Who needs Canine Blood? Blood products are collected from our pre-screened donor dogs to aid in life saving measures for dogs following car accidents, major surgery, illness, disease and disaster.   A small amount of blood product can go a long way to assist a fire victim on the road to recovery. Recently a barn fire occurred and many dogs were killed, injured and badly burned.   By receiving life saving plasma (a component of blood)  many of these lucky dogs are tail wagging and awaiting further care by their new fosters at Lost Dog Rescue.  Lost Dog Rescue, A non profit organization stepped in to assist Six of the barn fire victims, by providing costly medical treatments, and beginning the process of finding loving homes for these lucky dogs.  The Eastern Veterinary Blood Bank stepped forward and provided the much needed plasma for several of the dogs as a generous Donation.    Blue Ridge Veterinary Associates in Purcellville Virginia provided discounted Veterinary and nursing care services for the initial medical care for 13 of the burned dogs, as a donation to community service. The dedicated BRVA staff provided 24/7 medical treatments, nursing care, baths, burn treatments, followed by generous donations of loving care to each the dogs.  ?We are beginning to make positive progress on the road to recovery? said  Dr. Ross Peterson,  who assisted with the initial triage at the accident scene.   ?Burn victims are tough? smoke inhalation, trauma, and infection can provide many obstacles on the long road to recovery?.    The day after the fire, Blue Ridge lost its battle with one badly burned dog?. the other 12 remained in the hospital, and have made excellent progress.   Six of the hounds have been officially transferred to Lost Dog Rescue for care responsibility and eventual home placement. As of Saturday, all  recovering hounds were released for home care with their owners... or remain at BRVA for observation.   We are taking it one dog at at time, one day at a time.   September 2010: We can update this story with a "happy beginning" for all recovered dogs...  they are now living in great forever homes and some are now qualified to donate blood to save others!!!!

Donations have been made by Blue Ridge Veterinary Associates, Merial Corporation donated parasitical products to the rescue organization.   Frontline Plus for fleas and ticks & Heartgard for internal parasite prevention. Ayrshire Farms Donated Burn creams and ointments.   Tom Walker, DVM.,M.S  Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgeons,  of  D.C . VETS, Inc. will assist in surgery efforts for those dogs requiring skin grafts.

Thank you to the community who is reaching out and offering support,  your help is truly appreciated.
